The Taiping Kingdom, which lasted 14 years, reached the pinnacle of the old-style peasant war and was an unprecedented peasant uprising in world history.

Before the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Uprising, Hong Xiuquan intended to take “Taiping” as his goal. In January 1851, more than 20000 soldiers of the Taiping Army gathered in Jintian and formally launched an uprising, known as the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom.

Because the Qing Dynasty promoted shaving and changing clothes, the soldiers of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom did not shave their hair or tie braids. All of them were shaved, so the Taiping Army was also called “long hair”.

On January 11, 1851, it was Hong Xiuquan’s birthday. Believers of the God-worshiping congregation, about 20,000 people “wished longevity” in Jintian Village, and later generations designated this day as the anniversary of Jintian uprising.

On December 21, 1863, all the fortresses outside Tianjing were lost. Hong Xiuquan died of illness many days later. On July 19, 1864, Tianjing was captured by the Qing army.
