The “Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms” is a period of great division in Chinese history, from the New History of the Five Dynasties, which is the collective name of the Five Dynasties (907-960) and the Ten Kingdoms (902-979).
Five generations in turn are Liang, Tang, Jin, Han, Zhou five regimes, namely “Zhu Li Shi Liu Guo, Liang Tang Jin and Han Zhou.”
In 907 AD, after the demise of the Tang Dynasty, Zhu Wen, the founder of the Liang Dynasty, established Houliang in the Central Plains, with the capital in Kaifeng Prefecture, Tokyo (now Kaifeng, Henan), marking the beginning of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms.
In 923 AD, Li Cunxuan, the son of King Li Keyong of Jin, destroyed Houliang and established the Later Tang Dynasty. Since the latter Tang Dynasty, the five dynasties of kings have all come from Li Keyong’s descendants and subordinates. Under the expansion and consolidation of Mingzong in the later Tang Dynasty, the national strength became stronger and stronger gradually. But the good times did not last long, and then there was civil strife, which was destroyed by the Qi Dan army introduced by Shi Jingxu, the founding emperor of the later Jin Dynasty, and established the later Jin Dynasty.
After the two countries got along for a long time, some contradictions would inevitably arise. The relationship between Qi and Jin continued to deteriorate. In the end, the Khitan border went south to eliminate the Later Jin Dynasty and established the Liao Dynasty. At the same time, Liu Zhiyuan regained the Central Plains and changed the country name to “Han”, known as “Later Han” in history. However, Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty died after only 11 months as emperor. His nephew, Liao Chengyou, succeeded to the throne and refused to kill ministers. Later, Guo Wei was forced to fight against the Han Dynasty and the Emperor Yindi was killed. The later Han dynasty ruled for only four years, and the Five Dynasties ended.
The Ten Kingdoms is a collective name for ten relatively small autonomous regimes that existed at about the same time as the Five Dynasties. In the south, there were nine, namely Southern Wu, Southern Tang, Wuyue, Southern Chu, Former Shu, Later Shu, Southern Han, Nanping (Jingnan) and Min. In the north, there was Northern Han.
Wu was the strongest of the ten kingdoms, and was later usurped by Li Li Tong, who established the Southern Tang Dynasty. After the defeat of the Southern Tang Dynasty by the Later Zhou, the Later Shu was too happy and died in the Central Plains. After Zhao Kuangyin established the Song Dynasty (Northern Song Dynasty), he and his brother Song Taizong swept away the heroes, conquered the Northern Han Dynasty in 979 and unified the country.
