Qin Shi Huang did not stand up, the specific reason is unknown, and the historical records are not recorded. But there are many concubines in his harem, of which only two are known to us, one is Concubine Zheng, the mother of Gongzi Fusu, and the other is Hu Hai’s mother, Hu Ji.

King Huanzheng of Qin ascended the throne at the age of 13 and pro-government at the age of 22, and he should have married many women during this time, but he did not make an empress, perhaps to save the best for later. But during the 28-year reign, between the ages of 22 and 50, Qin Shi Huang had no empress for a very curious reason. Posterity has two conjectures.

First, Zhao Ji, the mother of the First Emperor of Qin, behaved badly. First she was the concubine of merchant Lu Buwei. After two months of pregnancy (many people think that she was pregnant with the later Emperor of Qin), she was presented by Lu Buwei to Chu, the grandson of the State of Qin. After he ascended the throne, Zhao Ji was called King Zhuang Xiang. After the death of King Zhuang Xiang, she was still disconnected from Lu Buwei as empress dowager. “Historical Records · Biography of Lu Buwei” records: “The First Emperor was stronger, and the Empress Dowager was more and more adulterous.” Later, she had an affair with Miao Lu and gave birth to two sons. Miao Lu even scolded the ministers after drinking: “I am the fake father of the King of Qin, how dare I fight with me?” The debauchery of his mother made the First Emperor of Qin very contemptuous, embarrassed, mentally suppressed, and his personality became very complicated. Introverted, paranoid, tyrannical, ruthless. Finally, it broke out, killing two illegitimate brothers, driving the mother out of Xianyang, and removing Lu Buwei from his post. As a result, Lu Buwei committed suicide by taking poison for fear of being punished. Resentment towards his mother later developed into hatred towards women, resulting in his stubbornness in marriage. Although there are many beauties in the harem, for Qin Shihuang, it is just the object of his vent.

It is a traditional political custom to appoint the eldest son born to the wife of the queen as the crown prince. However, Qin Shihuang’s favorite was not his eldest son, Fusu, but his youngest son, Hu Hai. According to Zizhi Tongjian, “The first emperor had more than twenty sons, and the youngest son, Hu Hai, loved him most. “If the throne was established, it would not be able to inherit, because Hu hai’s mother was the latest to know Qin Shi Huang, and had the lowest seniority. In the end, Hu hai of the second Emperor of Qin inherited the throne. When Huhai came to the throne, the emperor’s entire harem was buried, and many of his brothers and sisters were killed to cover this up, since many of them were theoretically more qualified to be emperor than he was. One of the reasons why Qin Shihuang did not establish a queen was that he did not want the throne to be inherited by other sons in the future.
